Prof’s Picks

I nipped into the Lass O’Gowrie for more top tips from Professor Peach this afternoon… as Doctor Who betting swings into crazy territory, I thought it best to bring things back down to earth…

Especially after reading Online Betting Guide – remember kids, it’s a mug’s game – who have some strange ideas about how to relate an actor’s name…

David Morrisey Favourite After Christmas Special Details Are Leaked

The new favourite to land the job is David Morrisey who is 3/1 with Paddy Power. Speculation has been rife that it will be the star of The Other Boleyn Girl and Basic Instinct 2 after it emerged he will be in the Christmas special which is interestingly called ‘The Next Doctor’. Could there be a bigger clue?

First Black Doctor A Strong Possibility

Joseph Patterson [sic], the former favourite, would be the first black Doctor Who and has already appeared in the show meaning he is known to producers. He is 6/1 with Paddy Power.

Nesbitt And Simm Realistic Names

James Nesbitt is well known to UK TV audiences and he is 8/1 with Paddy Power whilst John Simm, another actor who has been seen recently in a popular television series (Life On Mars) is 10/1.

So what did the Prof think of this lot? Other than being extremely doubtful about John Simm, not alot – but he did have this to say on the main Paddy Power Doctor Who listing

"Aiden Gillan’s in there from when Eccleston left (they panicked when I asked ’em for a price and slid him in at joint 3rd, so he’s a hangover), although he makes some fair points.

I’m still sore that Paddy Power refused my bet on Freema Agyeman as the Rose replacement then closed the book on it hours later. I think they’ve got me down as a Who ringer…

Gods truth! The Freema thing was a hunch, as she had a low profile but had gone down well in Doomsday and – given the fact there’d never been a black companion and that RTD is a lazy casting man who ssentially goes for what he knows – it all added up for me."

Do you have any particularly strong feelings about the casting and the ensuing media circus? I’m sure you do – as does Lawrence "Mad Larry" Miles, former Doctor Who novelist and a man with some very strong opinions. You have been warned…
