The Song of Megaptera

The Song of Megaptera is the latest from Big Finish’s series of Lost Stories from the cancelled 1985 series of Doctor Who. Previously known as “The Song of the Space Whale”, the story is by Pat Mills, based on his original Fifth Doctor era pitch, with John Wagner.

The Song of Megaptera, Doctor Who Lost StoryAfter failing to become the story that introduced Turlough, “The Song of the Space Whale” was later lined up for the same slot as Vengeance on Varos, but again the Mills-only script was dropped, only to be picked up 25 years later by Big Finish for their excellent series of lost adventures.

Deep space in the distant future, and Captain Greeg and his crew are hunting mile-long Space Whales on a vast harvesting ship. By pure accident, they also capture the TARDIS.

The Doctor and Peri must use all their wits to survive. But what is the creature running loose in the ship’s bowels? And can the Doctor save Megaptera before its song is extinguished forever?

Starring Colin Baker as the Doctor and Nicola Bryant as Peri, The Song of Megaptera features John Benfield as Captain Greeg, Neville Watchurst as Stennar/Manus, John Banks as The Caller/Ship’s Computer, Susan Brown as Chief Engineer/Chanel, Toby Longworth as Stafel/1st Security Guard and Alex Lowe as Axel/2nd Security Guard.

Doctor Who and me go way back. I first discovered it on my local PBS Station WHYY in the suburbs outside Philadelphia when I was a young kid; though I am uncertain of the exact age.
