A New Sonic Screwdriver!

With all the action figures and paraphernalia from the new series of Doctor Who, a lot of the classic merchandise has been put to one side recently. Yes, there have been figures of all eleven Doctors released as well as classic villains but the majority of the collectibles has focused on the last five years of Who, which is no bad thing.

Doctor Who - Third Doctor's Sonic ScrewdriverNow however, manufacturers have decreed “No more!” and have released a lovingly realised “Classic Sonic Screwdriver” for kids old and young to use. It’s based on the Third Doctor’s model and will take die hard fans back to the old school days, before we even realised that the device had a setting to reattach barbed wire. It’s an exclusive to Forbidden Planet and the description reads as:

“The Sonic Screwdriver is a versatile tool and defensive device first used by the Doctor in his second incarnation for opening up hatches, panels and controls.

Later uses included cutting through wall sections and even as a conventional screwdriver. During the Third Doctor’s exile on Earth he had a larger and more elaborately detailed version, which had a decorated silver handle and black and yellow stripes. This version had even more functions including detecting security traps, remote detonation of mines, opening doors and restraints, creating ignition sparks and again removing screws and fixings.

In this exclusive release is an electronic version of the Third Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver with 2 sounds and spring loaded sound activation.”

This is a must for any Doctor Who fans that wetted their ears with the Pertwee era of Who. It’s also a must for any collector, any casual viewer, anyone who hasn’t seen the show at all…oh just go and buy it already!

The Third Doctor’s Sonic Screwdriver is available in the UK and Ireland only from September 10th 2010. You can pre order it now from www.forbiddenplanet.co.uk.

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!
