Colin Baker in Kangazang

Former Sixth Doctor actor Colin Baker has lent his vocal talents to a new audio book release of a sci-fi romp entitled Kangazang.

Sixth Doctor Who Colin Baker reads KangazangThe triple CD set, released by Candy Jar Books, features not only Baker providing a multitude of voices but also up and coming Welsh actress Claire Cage who has appeared in the Torchwood episode Sleeper, deputised for Zoe Wanamaker during The End of the World studio recordings and has also been in Sherlock! The plot for Kangazang is very Hitchhikers’ Guide to the Galaxy-esque:

“When life’s problems get you down, a good way to escape the troubles is to take a holiday. The further away, the better. Troubled Earthman and Kebab-lover Jeff Spooner is having a bad time. His fiancé found love in the arms of the local vicar, and she dumped him. Plus she wants the £50 he owes her back. And to make matters worse, he seems to be mocked by the sounds of ‘I Should Be So Lucky’ and ‘Don’t Worry, Be Happy’. Fortunately, help and hope comes in the guise of Ray, Jeff’s eccentric but likeable barber. A man with a plan.

“A man hard to understand. A man from Kangazang! Together, this unlikely pair of heroes set off to see the sights, find a decent pub, and more importantly, save the entire universe, aided by a tribe of warrior spacehoppers, in a spacecraft made of human hair.”

If you buy the audio book, you also get exclusive interviews with the cast and crew, within which Colin discusses his time on Doctor Who, his love of Sci-Fi and also talks about Kangazang itself:

“Kangazang! coincides with my type of humour. It’s a bit undergrad in parts – but it made me laugh and its got heart. I like all that.”

The audio version of Kangazang is based on a book written by Terry Cooper, who has nothing but praise for Baker:

“I knew straight away that I wanted Colin. With a long career in both science fiction and audio books, he is a real professional who totally understands the genre. He exceeded my expectations and really brought the script to life. For a guy to perform for 9 to 10 hours in the studio, and keep his energy going is something I could never do.

“I asked Colin if I could do some voices as well and he was totally up for that, which proves that he doesn’t have an ego and is just a great person.”

So if you’re a fan of Colin Baker or even if you’re not, Kangazang will have something to offer everyone.

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!
