“It’s been brilliant!”

Everyone’s favourite Scotsman David Tennant has praised successor Matt Smith in a new Radio Times interview about his departure from Doctor Who and the direction his career has taken since.

It’s all part of the promotion for Single Father, the show in which he stars alongside (Doctor Who Series 6 guest star) Suranne Jones.

As you might expect, there is plenty of Doctor Who-related content, not least concerning the timing of his departure.

“…it felt just right, actually. It still does. It felt right to pass the baton on and for it to continue to thrive. I think that was all exactly as I would wish it to be.”

While admitting that there was a downside to starring in the immensely successful show, Tennant is clear that this was outweighted by the “upside.”

“It was just wonderful and it created many, many more opportunities than it closed down. I think my life is in a very different place and my career is in a very different place to what it was before I did Doctor Who and that is 90 per cent positive.”

Tennant refuses point blank, however, to “slag off the bloke what nicked the gig”, Matt Smith. Instead, it seems as though he really enjoyed watching the show he has been a fan of for nearly 40 years, without being in it himself.

“I’m very nervous to say anything,” he hesitates, “because anything I say is turned into some soundbite and used by the Daily Mail as proof that I’m a… Genuinely, I think it’s been brilliant. I’ve loved every second of it. It’s a thrill for me to be watching it as a viewer again. I knew Matt was going to be fantastic and he is. He’s a great choice and he’s knocked it out of the park.”

Imagine that? Actor in modesty shocker.
