New Adventures from IDW

IDW have announced their forthcoming plans for their newest range of Doctor Who comics and they’re going to feature the Eleventh Doctor, Amy Pond and Rory Williams!

In a continuation of partnership with BBC Worldwide, IDW will, from January 2011, publish Doctor Who #1- a fresh new run of ongoing space and time adventures for the newest Doctor and his friends. revealed the following about the first issues:

“Penned by mainstay writer, Tony Lee, DOCTOR WHO #1 finds the Doctor and his new companions, Amy Pond and Rory Williams, battling holographic spam and ‘friending’ requests on a planet that’s hours from destruction by an alien race. Artist Andrew Currie brings this debut adventure to life, with Tommy Lee Edwards offering eye-catching covers on each issue.

“Plus, the Eisner Award winning Fables superstar Mark Buckingham also offers an incentive cover for issue #1, and will provide interior art on an upcoming issue, as well. Kelley Yates will also provide an incentive cover for issue #1, featuring a die-cut gatefold image that allows fans to open the TARDIS and see The Doctor inside.”

If that’s not enough to wet your whistle, we’re also promised a run in with Jack the Ripper, holographic spam fighting Mad Max-esque mercenaries and penalty shoot-outs against Vikings and Cybernetic Space Pirate Dinosaurs. And to keep fans really intrigued, series editor Denton J Tipton cryptically mentioned the following:

“There’s going to be something for everyone in this story. For example, fans of the classic series should be on the lookout for a classic Doctor Who villain… I could tell you who they are, but I’d have to kill you,” adds Lee… “Let’s just say we’ve been given special dispensation to use them, and we have a killer story – in all senses of the word!”

So while you may be saddened that there’re no more ongoing Tenth Doctor comics coming soon, you’ve got plenty of new story arcs and adventure to have with the latest TARDIS crew.

Doctor Who #1 will be available to buy from January, check your local comic store for details.

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!
