Christmas is closer than you think… literally.
With less than five weeks to go until December comes around, towns and cities are gearing up for this years festivities. And Cardiff has naturally chosen to utilise one of it’s strongest assets to get things started-Doctor Who!
Matt Smith and Karen Gillan, with Arthur Darvill on hand as well, will be turning on the Cardiff’s Christmas lights this year on November 10th. Matt spoke about how honoured he is to be a part of the city’s “switch onâ€:
“It’s a real honour to be asked to switch on Cardiff’s Christmas lights because the city has become like a second home to not only me, but the rest of the Doctor Who production team…we love filming here in Wales and we even managed to get into the festive spirit extra early this year when filming the Doctor Who Christmas special in August…Cardiff is a great city and I’d like to thank all of its residents for being so welcoming and accommodating.â€
Residents of Cardiff may have already started to feel the Christmas spirit as the filming of the 2010 Doctor Who Christmas special recently took place. Nigel Howells, the council’s executive member for sport, leisure and culture, commented:
“The Christmas lights switch-on has become the traditional start of the festive season in Cardiff, and this year, to celebrate the 10th Winter Wonderland; we welcome another three stellar names from BBC Cymru Wales’ Doctor Who, which has such a strong connection with the city, to help us launch the lights, shopping and attractions.â€
Former Doctor David Tennant and co actor Billie Piper switched the Cardiff Christmas lights on in 2005.
This will be a great night for all the family so if you want to make the trip, it takes place on November 10 on King Edward VII Avenue, Cardiff at 7.40pm.
