Matt Smith stars in Olympic rowing drama Bert and Dickie

Matt Smith On Bert & Dickie And Acting

Matt Smith’s keeping busy outside of Doctor Who – but the heavy schedule doesn’t allow him to do much outside of it!

One of the outside projects he has pursued (Bert & Dickie, an Olympic drama about Bert Bushnell and Richard Burnell’s struggle to win a gold medal in the Double Sculls) is airing tomorrow, and he gave some comments about his acting life at a press screening (reproduced in slightly edited form below).

“Of course, you have to be selective [in picking roles to play], because we shoot Doctor Who for nine, ten months – all in all, you get about a month to do something else.”

Here’s a gallery of images by way of a preview of tomorrow’s broadcast:

It’s nice to know that he wasn’t lured away from the prospect of time off by the money, though:

“It’s made by people I know at the BBC and people that are of great repute. And that’s important. There was a good director attached and I always thought it would get a good, strong cast. But it just has to start with a script and I guess I just responded to that.”

Naturally, we all hope that the drama will be something that Smith will be proud to put on his CV, alongside Doctor Who, Christopher And His Kind and the frankly strange-sounding Clone.

Catch Bert & Dickie at 8.30pm on Wednesday evening on BBC One!
