We heard recently how Matt Smith was all for upping the Doctor Who production team to New Zealand to work with acclaimed director Peter Jackson – but it seems that the Australians want a piece of the action!
The age-old rivalry between the two former colonies has reared its ugly head thanks to Federal MP George Christiansen, who has recently launched a campaign to take Doctor Who down under in 2015, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of the show’s very first Australian screening.
He’s written to Steven Moffat, and you guessed it, Christiansen is a fan…
As an avid Dr Who fan, I would love to see the TARDIS materialise in Australia and, most importantly, it would be a tremendous boost to tourism in Bowen and the Whitsundays, as well as to the local economy.
Christensen claims that the Whitsundays area is an ideal location to shoot Doctor Who; it was previously used for Baz Luhrmann’s Australia, which starred Wolverine actor Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman.
We have the runs on the board in this region because we have a lot to offer a production company.
Of course, Australians are no stranger to Doctor Who. Kylie Minogue memorably guest starred in Voyage of the Damned, while Janet Fielding (Tegan Jovanka, companion to Doctors four and five) hailed from the vast country. Meanwhile Katy Manning has Australian citizenship after emigrating there many years ago.
What do you think? Is the Doctor due a trip down under?
