Colin Baker Stars in Menston Green

Britain’s longest running soap, Menston Green, is in trouble. Its most enduring cast member has died, its ratings are flagging and its producer has abandoned ship; paving the way for a new generation to take the reins, taking the show quite literally into the stratosphere.

This full cast radio comedy (the trailer for which you can hear above), is written, directed and produced by Alex Skerratt (a writer on for Sooty amongst many other credits) under the banner of his homespun media outlet Skerratt Media and stars the Sixth Doctor Colin Baker – who graciously gave his time to appear in the production – as recounted here:

Thank you Colin Baker! A legendary actor with a career that encompasses so many of my favourite shows: Blake’s 7, Doctor Who, Jonathan Creek, Come Dine with Me… He drove up from Cambridge just to record this quirky comedy about a village convenience store, produced by a Ray Bolger lookalike. I don’t know how many other celebrities would travel hundreds of miles to record with an unknown production company, but he’s made my year.

“I did offer Paul Darrow a role in this,” I told Colin during a recording break, (Paul Darrow was Avon in Blake’s 7, and has acted with Colin Baker a number of times.)

“Could be worse,” Colin said, with a cheeky grin. “You could have got Sylvester McCoy!”

The following small gallery features some snaps from the recording of Menston Green.

Menston Green is available as an MP3 download for a very respectable £3, and can be found on the Skerratt Media website.

(With thanks to Alex)
