Event Whorizon – How To Celebrate Fifty Years!

Over the world and across space and time; Doctor Who celebrates its 50th anniversary this month and to mark this auspicious occasion events by those behind the scenes and the adoring fans of the show have been organised to make sure the first fifty years of the show go with a bang!

So here it is, Kasterborous’ constantly-evolving round-up of what’s happening across the globe in the name of the Doctor!

And, as the great day draws closer and closer, we’ll be updating this page with all the latest news, events and screening information making sure you know all there is to know both locally and across the globe!


Throughout November Forbidden Planet will be hosting a chain-wide anniversary celebration where fans can pick up freebies and earn discounts on Doctor Who items.

Firstly, the store have produced eleven exclusive limited edition carrier bags – each one showcasing a specific Doctor in a fetching silhouette design. Each week from now until December 10th two designs will be available to customer purchasing Doctor Who items.

The release schedule is as follows:

1– 3 November

Reversed Polarity – a Doctor Who 50th Anniversary convention run by the Toronto-based TCON Promotional Society – will be hosting Q&A’s with a variety of guests associated with the show’s history, as well as the opportunity for fans of the show to participate in writing workshops, a costume competition, two dances, shopping, prop displays, and many other activities.

The featured guests of the event include: Peter Davison, Dan Starkey, Director Graeme Harper, and Sound Engineer Dick Mills.

Other guests appearing at Reversed Polarity include writers Julie Czerneda, JM Frey, Graeme Burk, Robert Smith?, and Nikki Stafford.

Registration for the event is available at the door on the convention weekend November 1- 3.

6 November

Come and have your photo taken with either a Dalek or the Tardis at the Malvern Library, Australia for your chance to win the Eleven Doctors Micro Figures Set and have your picture displayed at the library.

Also from Monday 28th October to Sat 30 November the library will be showing a selection of Doctor Who episodes beginning with the very first episode

Leading up to August the National Media Museum had called for submission for a major new exhibition celebrating 50 years of Doctor Who fans – now on the 12th November that exhibition opens its doors to the general public until the 2nd March 2014.

16 November – Ongoing

The National Space Museum in Leicester will hold ‘Science of the Time Lords’ on 16th November between 10:00 – 17:00, where children and adults alike can take a closer look at time travel, teleportation and robots with a helping hand from some of the Doctors former companions including Sophie Aldred, Nicola Byrant and Louise Jameson.

In addition, voice of the Daleks and Cybermen Nicholas Briggs will return to the National Space Centre with the Monster Challenge, giving visitors a chance to try the Ring Modulator and create the perfect alien voice.

Tickets cost £13 for adults and £11 for children.

Manchester Celebrates Doctor Who With "Who At Fifty" Cultural Events

Four of Manchester’s best loved venues are teaming up for a Doctor Who mini-festival this November with a host of events over two weeks to celebrate the Doctor’s anniversary.

New drama, live episodes, screenings, poetry. With more goodies than you can shake a sonic screwdriver at, it’s truly bigger on the inside!

The Lass O’Gowrie, FAB Cafe, Taurus and the Town Hall Tavern take on hosting duties which include The Art of Who – a look behind the Doctor Who Comic Strip, conversations with Andrew Cartmel and Waris Hussein, a stage adaptation of An Unearthly Child – from the team behind the fringe smash hits V for Vendetta and Halo Jones, a performance by The Scottish Falsetto Sock Puppet Theatre and much, much more.

Who at Fifty is Manchester’s very own Doctor Who fringe festival, running 16th – 30th November, 2013.

The University of Central Lancashire are planning a special event on the 16th November: Doctor Who: The Science Behind The Scenes will be a day of presentations about the show and the science it uses, including topics like Science Fact or Science Fiction?, The Psychology of Doctor Who and Is Time Travel Possible?

There will also be a Q&A with Doctor Who screenwriter Stephen Gallagher, workshops, make-up, costumes and mask-making, and an area to have memorabilia assessed and valued!

Tickets for the event which takes place at the Darwin Building of the university, are £5 for full day entry.


Splendid Chaps – a year-long performance/podcast series celebrating the 50th anniversary, featuring comedian Ben McKenzie (Dungeon Crawl, Melbourne Museum Comedy Tour) and writer John Richards (ABC1 sitcom Outland, Boxcutters podcast) have a number of live dates throughout November in Australia.

Described by its creators as part intellectual panel discussion, part nerdy Tonight Show, Splendid Chaps is a combination of analysis, enthusiasm and irreverence.

Tickets are now available for their three live November shows: What I Learned from Doctor Who which takes place at the Toorak/South Yarra Library, 340 Toorak Road, South Yarra on Saturday, November 16 2013, 4:00 PM, The Other Splendid Chaps: The Companions  at the Melbourne City Library, 253 Flinders Lane, Melbourne on Tuesday, November 19 2013, 6:30 PM and Eleven/Future at ACMI, Federation Square, Melbourne, on Thursday, November 21 2013; recording starts 7 PM.

One week before the anniversary night itself American pub quiz leaders Geeks Who Drink will host Don’t Blink: A Doctor Who Quiz, a one-night-only Doctor Who trivia event in twenty major cities.

Thousands of Whovians will crowd bars and restaurants across the United States to answer questions about the show whose appeal has crossed all age, geographic, and planetary boundaries.

Quiz questions will primarily cover nu-Who with some classic Who material thrown in for good measure. Quiz teams are limited to a six player max, with a $5 admission fee for each player and total prizes in the hundreds of dollars. Admission is first come/first served. The Doctor will be a guest of the palace on Monday 18th November where the Countess of Wessex – who is believed to be something of an admirer of the programme – will host a reception as the countdown to Doctor Who’s golden milestone reaches its final few days.

So far, the guests are being kept under wrap.


23 November

Here it is…the day itself. The golden anniversary and The Day of the Doctor!

The BBC have already confirmed that the anniversary special will be shown in 216 selected Cineworld, Odeon, BFI, Picturehouse and VUE cinemas in the UK and Ireland in locations including London, Birmingham, Belfast, Dublin, Liverpool, Cardiff and Edinburgh.

While internationally, German, Russian, American and Canadian fans will also be able to gather in cinemas to enjoy the simulcast release.

Meanwhile The Milwaukee Time Lords will be holding a special event for the 50th anniversary of the show on 23rd November. The event, scheduled for a 6am start time at the Sci-Fi Cafe, 532 Pine Street, Burlington, WI, will include a screening of every regeneration episode leading up to the event we’ve all been waiting for – the anniversary episode titled The Day Of The Doctor.

Following a concerted campaign by fans in Denmark, cinemagoers will be able to see the anniversary special, at one of three special showings at the CinemaxX cinema chain.

The episode will be shown on the evening of 23rd November at branches in Odense, Aarhus and the capital Copenhagen.


Brit Movie Tours offer a Doctor Who Walking Tour, taking visitors on a ‘capital’ adventure around 15 ‘set-jetting’ locations around London, including sites featured in The Invasion, Remembrance of the Daleks and Rose.

Tours run over the 50th anniversary weekend 23-24 November and last approximately 2 ½ hours. Tickets cost £12 for adults and £10 for children.

Celebrate The Doctor Who 50th Anniversary!

Relive some of the Doctor’s greatest moments with over 40 guests from across the shows 50 years over the anniversary weekend when Doctor Who Celebration takes over the ExCel centre London.

The Fifth Doctor himself Peter Davison, will be attending all three days. Joining Peter on Saturday 23 November will be William Russell and Carole Ann Ford, who starred as companions Ian and Susan alongside First Doctor William Hartnell, plus the Director of An Unearthly Child, Waris Hussein.

Dick Mills of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, and visual effects gurus Mike Tucker and Mat Irvine will also be on hand to facilitate some of the special features at the Celebration, which will be announced in more detail soon.

They will join current Doctor Matt Smith and former Doctors Tom Baker (who’ll be attending Saturday 23rd), Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy at the ultimate anniversary event, which will welcome over 20,000 fans of the world’s favourite Time Lord to the venue in east London.

The Doctor Who 50th Celebration’s opening hours will also be extended on Saturday evening so visitors can enjoy a free 2D simulcast screening of The Day of the Doctor together.

Saturday attendees will be emailed shortly with details about how they can reserve a seat. Visitors should note that the screening will have limited availability and tickets will be allocated on a first come first served basis.

The Doc Lands @ 50 – A party celebrating the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who is to be held in London in November.

Organised by Jeremy and Paula Bentham together with Tony Clark, the Party will be free to attend and will take place at a venue in Docklands on Saturday 23rd November, starting around 7pm after the BBC’s Doctor Who 50th Celebration at ExCeL has ended that day.

The party is open to all people aged 18 and over, whether or not they are going to the ExCeL event.

If the broadcast of the anniversary episode and any other Doctor Who programming by the BBC coincides with when the party is taking place, it will be shown on the venue’s large-screen TV.

Food and drink will be available to buy at the party

Entry to The Doc Lands @ 50 Party is by allocated tickets only and capacity strictly limited to 1,500 places.

Frank Danes, author of Fifty Years in Time and Space: A Short History of Doctor Who, will be giving a talk on The History of Doctor Who at Topping and Co. bookshop, in the grand setting of the Bishop’s Palace in Ely, Cambridgeshire.

Galloping through the history of Doctor Who; expect a glorious, witty celebration including Daleks, Cybermen, Drashigs, and, of course, the Weeping Angels.
