The First Sontarans writer Andrew Smith

Andrew Smith’s Sontaran Genesis

The First Sontarans writer Andrew SmithLooking forward to listening to the newest Lost Story title The First Sontarans? Well so are most of the cast and crew!

For whilst the play is released this month, it was recorded over a year ago by Big Finish with a very happy production team who have nothing but praise for the story of how the Sontarans began.

Website icLanarkshire have published a focus piece on their very own Andrew Smith (the Full Circle scriptwriter who first developed the play in the mid 80’s) as the boy from their town who “done good”, based on interviews from the Rutherglen Reformer. Colin Baker was very happy with the end results of his work:

“[The story] was a clever and fast paced exploration of the origins of the Sontaran race and the fact that it took place in Victorian England added brilliantly to the drama.”

His partner in crime, actress Nicola Bryant was similarly full of praise for he adventure and its writer:

“I’ve become good friends with Andrew, so to do The First Sontarans was just tremendous. I loved the Sontaran story we did on TV, but it’s a different look at them and it’s nice to come up against them again.”

Finally, Director of The First Sontarans Ken Bentley, talked about his initial reactions to the script when he first picked it up:

“When I read the script for the first time I remember it was quite unexpected. Yes, it delivers everything we expect from a Sontaran story, but it also manages to deliver so much more. There’s an emotional heart to this story.”

So, do we have another Spare Parts or Genesis of the Daleks on our hands? The gushing comments and positivity that the cast have towards The First Sontarans certainly indicates this, but you’ll just have to find out for yourself!

The First Sontarans is available on CD for £14.99 or download for £12.99 from
