The Waters of Mars Previewed

The Waters of Mars stars David Tennant, Lindsay Duncan and Gadget.

Several outlets have provided spoiler free reviews of The Waters of Mars, despite the next Doctor Who adventure being two weeks from broadcast.

The Telegraph leads the way in the glowingly positive set of reviews that in many cases draw a sharp contrast with the fluffy excesses of Easter’s Planet of the Dead, noting how the remote, enclosed location of the Mars base evokes Doctor Who of old

What ensues is proper off-world sci-fi, with visual nods to Space: 1999, Thunderbirds and Back to the Future…

There’s lots of running down corridors, airlocks that leak right on cue, and a really corking second-by-second countdown to destruction.

For fans of vintage Who, this episode is a classic.

Meanwhile SFX are happy to reveal the tone of the episode, if not the events. Brace yourselves, girls and boys…

We knew there was darkness on the horizon…we didn’t expect something quite so challenging.

I don’t think we’re ever going to forget The Waters of Mars; everything is pointing to a 100% classic with the biggest impact since Doomsday

Incidentally, if you’re after preview images from The Waters of Mars, look no further than Den of Geek – the accompanying image plus several of funky robot Gadget can be found there.

We’ll leave the last word to SFX, however:

This was a bold and exciting episode of Doctor Who. It feels light years from “Planet Of The Dead” and it explosively establishes a new mind-set for the Tenth Doctor’s last bow this winter. We’re already wondering whether Christmas evening might be a little grimmer than usual…
