Vincent and the Doctor: Nebulous?

Another year and another awards gathering is taking place and, as expected, an episode of Doctor Who is in the running to win a prize!

The Nebula Awards, hosted by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America group (or SFWA), will be taking place on Saturday 21st May 2011 at the Washington Hilton in Washington D.C so if you’re around the area on that date you may just run into a few familiar faces!

Categories include best Short Story, best Novelette, best Novella, best Novel and the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy. The final category which will grab the interest of any Doctor Who fan is The Ray Bradbury Award for Outstanding Dramatic Presentation which features the Series 5 episode Vincent and the Doctor. Both Richard Curtis, the writer of the episode and Jonny Campbell are name checked.

The episode itself stands up against some pretty heavy competition; in fact it’s all Hollywood movies. Nominations include Despicable Me, Inception, Toy Story 3, How to Train Your Dragon and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. So out of all the television shows in the world, Doctor Who is the only one that competes against Tinsel town!

The awards will be voted on and presented by members of the SFWA so its unfortunately not open to the public to sway the votes. But Doctor Who has always held its own so here’s keeping our fingers crossed that our favourite television show beats all the multi million dollar movies that came out last year!

To find out more, you can visit or – voting takes place between March 1st and March 30th.

What happens when an eight year old kid watches the 1993 repeat run of Planet of the Daleks? He pretty much ends up here writing about the show that grabbed hold of him and never let go!
