The Age Old Question

Just how old is the Doctor? He’s been 730, 759, 650 and more recently he’s been telling all and sundry he’s 900 years-old- but as age old Philosopher Dr. Henry Jones once said: “Its not the age, its the mileage.”

Fantasy writer Neil Gaiman (author some little-read tome called The Graveyard Book, as well as Doctor Who Series 6 episode The Doctor’s Wife) believes there has been no better person than Matt Smith at making us feel each of those 900 years.

Gaiman told InnerSPACE that he never doubts Matt Smith’s interpretation of the Doctors accumulated wisdom and world weariness:

“I think Matt does something that nobody else has ever done in that his Doctor feels old.”

Gaiman wryly recalls the skepticism about the choice of the then 27 year-old Smith to play the Doctor, who, so far is the youngest actor to portray the last of the Time Lord’s-pipping Fifth Doctor Peter Davison by two years.

“This is somebody who is really, really old and he’s been [travelling] for a long time. He’s not thinking quite like we think and, yes, he’s alien, but more than that he’s old.”

Doctor Who returns with The Impossible Astronaut at 6pm Saturday 23rd April on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.
