And so, with a freshly packed suitcase and plenty of toothbrushes, the Doctor Who team head back to Spain for the first time in over 25 years as filming of the new series continues.
The reasons for the Spanish excursion seem to be to recreate a 19th century Western town for the Doctor, Amy and Rory to lock heads with some half robot/half human enemies (as we understand for now).
This is the first time that the TARDIS has set its occupants down in this particular time zone since 1966’s The Gunfighters, in which the First Doctor, Steven and Dodo encountered trouble at the OK Corral. The thought of the Eleventh Doctor riding a horse whilst wearing a Stetson seems like one of those ideas that should have been done straight away!
We’ll also be looking forward to Adrian Scarborough (Upstairs, Downstairs) as well as a few other guest stars giving their al to provide a “Western feel” and if we don’t see an epic shoot out at some point then we’ll all be disappointed!
Various sources have provided fans with images, notably Bleeding Cool who’s collection of images from the location shoot shows a nice range of stars (Matt, Karen and Arthur) and unidentifiable guests (Scarborough? Ben Browder?). Clicking the link means potential spoilers, of course…
The Doctor Who production team last filmed in Spain during Colin Baker’s era as the Sixth Doctor for The Two Doctors, Seville was a last minute replacement for New Orleans and saw the return of not only the Sontarans but also the second Doctor and his friend Jamie as well.
You’ll also find some snaps at the Daily Mail website, who don’t miss a trick in using Doctor Who to shift copies with good news and bad.
Doctor Who returns to BBC One later this year!
