If you like going to comic conventions but don’t want to deal with the craziness of the larger cons like Wizard World or the impossible to get a ticket to San Diego Comic Con, have you ever thought about checking out any local comic, anime, or fan conventions in your area?
Last year, at least here in the US, almost every weekend saw at least one convention or show take place. Most of them are the small, local events, where you don’t need to pay hefty sums just to enter the building – and some of these local cons even play host to some of those celebrities that play the bigger conventions.
Last weekend, I had the pleasure of attending one such local event, RetroCon, at the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center in Oaks, PA, and not only got to meet Joel Hodgson from Mystery Science Theater 3000 and Larry Kenny, the voice of the Thundercats’ Lion-O, but I also got to see Kasterborous’ own Brian Terranova and his beautiful Blue Box!
Brian and some other cosplaying friends were on hand for pictures with his gorgeous full size TARDIS replica.
Bleeding Cool even had a reporter cover the event, who happened interviewing Brian and his Eleventh Doctor cosplaying friend.
“Jared Cornelius: Doctors how long have you been coming to Retro Con?
DT Doctor: I have been coming to Retro Con for about three years now, but not really until 200 years from now. It’ll be my third time.
JC: Is that in Time Lord time?
DT Doctor: Sort of, you travel through time and space and you can’t really tell time anymore because it doesn’t exist, it’s three, I think it’s three, it’s three right?
MS Doctor: It depends on the time zone. This is 2015 no 14, this is the third time in their time stream.
DT Doctor: Ok, Ok, yeah, their time stream, sure, yeah.
JC: I take it you’re bad with appointments?
DT Doctor: Oh god, if it wasn’t for disappointment I wouldn’t have any appointments
[*Editor’s Note, HMS sneaking in here: Is that a They Might Be Giants reference? I think so…]
MS Doctor: What he said.”
One of the celebrity guests, former WWE star Sgt. Slaughter, got a quick ride in the TARDIS!
I also took the time to present Brian with his own little mini cross stitched TARDIS (Want the pattern? See this article!)
And if that weren’t enough, Terranova’s TARDIS also played host to a Who-themed wedding!
See what great fun can be had at a local con!
If you’re looking for a show or convention in your area, take a look at ConventionScene.com. They’ve got a pretty comprehensive list of all the upcoming North American conventions and have some listings for the rest of the world. You might find your own local gem like RetroCon! If you happen to live in the Pennsylvania area, check out RetroCons.com for their plans for next year’s convention!
(And if you’re lucky enough to be attending New York Comic Con this coming weekend, you might just see me! I’ll be covering the con for Kasterborous as well as working on staff for the convention. See you there!)
